Using Retrieval Practice to Improve Learning

Trying to remember what one previously studied (retrieval practice) is a potent way to learn, and is more effective than strategies such as rereading and highlighting (Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan & Willingham, 2013; Karpicke & Blunt, 2011). Instructors can incorporate more opportunities for retrieval practice into courses with frequent, low-stakes quizzes, embedded questions in reading assignments, clicker questions, minute papers, peer-testing exercises and more. In this session instructors will outline a strategy for how, when and where to use retrieval practice in their classes.
