Wisconsin Math Council: Empowering Mathematical Learning through Assessment

EDS 500, section 733
Course dates: May 3—31, 2017
 (15 hours as arranged)

UWL offers 1 GRAD credit

Conference dates: May 3—5, 2017

Elementary and secondary mathematics teachers will explore the tenets of purposeful assessment designed to improve student learning in mathematics. Aligned with one of the eight teaching practices highlighted in publication, Principles to Actions, Ensuring Mathematical Success for All, teachers will examine concrete strategies to elicit and use evidence of student thinking in order “to assess progress toward mathematical understanding and to adjust instruction continually in ways that support and extend learning” (NCTM, 2014, p. 10). This course, held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Council of Mathematics Annual Conference, will engage participants in multiple sessions that focus on assessing student learning. As part of this professional learning experience, participants will evaluate their own educational setting in relationship to this important teaching practice and create an action plan for continuous improvement. Course participants must attend two days of the conference to receive credit, as well as complete additional assignments by May 31, 2017.

Course objectives:

  • Participants will examine assessment strategies.
  • Participants will demonstrate the applications of these strategies to their own educational setting and their connection to the Mathematics Teaching Practice, Elicit and Use Evidence of Student Thinking.
  • Participants will demonstrate the application of at least two assessment strategies to their own educational setting through the development of action plan.
