Racial Identity Development and Inclusion: Implications and Opportunities for UWL

The Provost Office and Department of Psychology is proud to welcome Dr. Janet Helms to campus on February 22 and 23 for several events. All campus leaders and administrators are welcome to attend this 90-minute workshop to discuss the importance of racial and cultural factors in higher education.

Most major U.S. colleges and universities are based on a European model in which the white male power structure and culture are predominant. Consequently, efforts to diversify college environments are likely to continue to be inadequate without a conceptual framework for analyzing race-gender dynamics as they occur. Dr. Helms will explore the topic of racial identity development and its impact on UWL’s Sustaining Excellence strategic plan to “achieve demographic equity in access and retention of students, staff, faculty, and administrators.”  Through an interactive lecture, Dr. Helms will address the implications of racial identity development on leaders' understanding of themselves and their community.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own case examples or situations for analysis and discussion.

This workshop aligns with the UWL Sustaining Excellence areas of Achieving Excellence Through Equity and Diversity, and Investing in Our People.

Dr. Helms is the Augustus Long Professor in the Department of Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology and the Director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture at Boston College. Her full bio is available at https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/lsoe/faculty-research/faculty-directory/janet-helms.html.

Special thanks to the Provost Office for sponsoring Dr. Helms through the UWL Visiting Scholar of Color Grant.
