CATL Teaching & Learning Grant Applications Due
CATL Teaching and Learning Grants support projects that investigate how students learn and how teaching affects student thinking, learning, and behavior.
Eligibility: Applicants for CATL Teaching and Learning Grants must be full-time tenure-track faculty or instructional academic staff during the period of the grant project.

Three types of grants are available:
- Lesson Study Grants
Lesson study is classroom inquiry in which several instructors jointly design, teach, observe, analyze and refine a single class lesson in one of their courses. The goal of a lesson study is to better understand how students learn and to use that information to improve teaching. By focusing on a single lesson instructors can investigate specific student learning problems and try out teaching practices to support student learning. Lesson Study Grants support instructors to undertake a lesson study during the academic year.
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Grants (SoTL)*
The scholarship of teaching and learning is classroom research in which instructors investigate teaching and learning in their own classes. SoTL Grants fund projects that examine a significant learning issue or problem in one’s field, subject area, or course, e.g., why students have difficulty learning certain concepts or skills, difficulty applying knowledge and skills to new circumstances, achievement gaps among groups of students, and so on. SoTL Grants support instructors to design and carry out a SoTL project during the academic year.

- Course Embedded Undergraduate Research Grants
These grants are designed to help instructors develop novel course-embedded undergraduate research and creative activities. Grant recipients will be expected to:
- Attend a CATL workshop and design a peer-reviewed plan to embed research or creative projects into one or more of their courses.
- Teach their course using the the embedded research or creative project.
- Assess the impact of working on the research or creative project on student learning and behavior.
- Present their findings at the annual UWL Conference on Teaching and Learning.
Examples of novel research or creative projects could include:
- Work on a project for a client (the client could be on or off-campus).
- Help students design and implement a project of their own.
Preference will be given to:
- Instructors who have not previously received a course embedded undergraduate research grant.
- Instructors not already using course-embedded research in the selected course.
- Instructors who are using course-embedded research in the selected course, but want to significantly revise this aspect of their course
