Microaggressions in the Workplace

Microaggressions are “brief and commonplace?everyday exchanges that communicate?hostile, derogatory, denigrating or negative slights and insults?to certain individuals because of their group membership.” Saying “your English is very good!” to a person you perceive as Asian is a microaggression (you’re assuming that they are an immigrant when they might have been born in the United States and/or English is their first language) or handing a woman of color the trash to empty (you’re assuming that the only reason she could be there is because she is custodial staff). We can commit microaggressions without realizing we have, and with the best of intentions. But microaggressions hurt and anger those who receive them. In this session, you will learn how and why microaggressions occur, why you might commit them no matter who you are, how they feel to someone targeted by them, and what to do when you see or commit a microaggression.
